With Coinfully, silver and gold coin appraisals are near you no matter where you are. Experts with Coinfully give you the same attention to detail that you would get in person, but you can enjoy the process online and from the comfort of your home.

Appraising silver coins is the same process as appraising gold coins. The only difference is in the price of their metals and how that can play into a coin’s overall worth.

Where Is The Value in Coins With Precious Metals?

The three ways that your gold and silver coins could have value are in their numismatic value, the type of metal, or a combination of the two.

  • Numismatic Value: Coins with numismatic value are so rare that the gold or silver content in them does not contribute to the coin’s prices at all.
  • Metal Value: This is when your coin does not have any significant numismatic worth outside of the metal. These coins would be worth the same amount if sold as coins or melted down and sold as their metal.
  • Combination: When you have a combination of the two, the metal value will make up a majority of the coin’s value, but then the coin’s numismatic value increases the coin’s overall price.

For silver or gold coins with any numismatic value, the grade or condition will affect their price. High graded coins in good condition are worth more than coins in poorer or circulated grades. To find the condition of your coin you can reach out to PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) for your coin’s grade.

Gold Coin Appraisals

An illustrative diagram that explains how to understand the melt value of coins and how it is determined by the weight of the coin and percentage of precious metal, particularly focusing on gold and silver coins.

Your coin’s melt value is anywhere between $113.93 to $2,278.90. While that seems like enough money on its own, selling your gold coins could get you significantly more. The world’s most expensive coin ever sold was a gold coin for $18,900,000.

While gold coins can be worth far more than their melt value of at least $100, it is best to let an expert appraise them. Getting an expert to look at your coins during an appraisal can let you know if your coins are worth a few hundred or million.

Which Coins Contain Gold?

Unlike silver coins, which come in common denominations, gold coins come in different values: $1-$100.

The price of your gold coins is determined by weight and amount of gold. The amount of gold in gold coins ranges from 90% to 99.9%. Which means that your gold coins will look almost like pure gold.

Silver Coin Appraisals

Even though silver is not as valuable as gold, it does not mean that your silver coins are not as valuable. With so many things adding to the value of a silver coin, it can be hard to fully know the value of the coins in you coin collection without an appraisal.

Your silver coins melt value is not as much as gold coins with their silver value ranging from about $1.50 to $141. Their melt value is still more than your coin’s face worth, but their numismatic value could be worth a significant amount more than both.

Experts can let you know if you have a Morgan or Peace 1921 silver dollar during appraisals. The high end of both coins are over $10,000, but the Peace is more than 67 times that amount and the Morgan dollar is only $7,000 more.

Do not let this discourage you if you have any silver Morgan dollar coins, some can be worth over one million dollars. An appraisal can tell you if you have a Morgan dollar worth serious money.

Which Coins Contain Silver?

Most coins contained silver until 1965. Now, only dollar coins are made of silver.

Until 1964, 90% silver was used in most coins, making dollar coins, half-dollars, quarters, and dimes worth more than their face value on silver alone. After that, half-dollar coins contained silver, 40%, until 1970 and do not contain any silver after that.

Silver was only ever included in nickels with 35% silver from 1942 to 1945, during World War II.

Silver dollar coins have always had silver in them. The amount of silver in them is dependent on year and type. It can range from 40% to 99.9%. If you are unsure how much silver is in your silver dollar coins have an appraiser look at them.

Why Get an Online Appraisal For Gold and Silver Coins?

Online appraisals are easier than in-person appraisals with less stress and pressure.

If you are looking to have any gold or silver coins appraised near you, you may be sent to a coin shop. Any certified coin shop should be able to give you an appraisal, though you will have to carry your coins there and may have to leave your precious metal coins behind for their professionals to look at. Then, you have to take your coins home afterwards.

Some in-person appraisers may try to take advantage of you if you are a new coin collector or you have inherited a coin collection you do not know what to do with. They may try and get you to sell your coins to them for less than their worth with other coin buyers in mind.

These are reasons why more people are looking to have their gold and silver coins appraised online.

Coinfully’s online appraisals of gold, silver, and other coins are quick and easy. All you have to do is talk to an expert with us and create an inventory of your coins. In some cases, you will be asked for pictures of your coins.

If you like the ease of online appraisals, but want someone to look at your coins in person, Coinfully offers an at-home appraisal where they send an expert to you and your coins.

Either online or at-home, all of Coinfully’s appraisals are free and come with a zero-pressure to sell guarantee. However, if you are looking to sell your gold and silver coins online after an appraisal, you can send them to us. If you want to sell them after an at-home appraisal, you can receive a check from our experts at your home.
